The department is committed to advancing scientific knowledge and technological innovation to address critical environmental challenges through an integrated approach to education, research, and outreach.

Our academic programs are designed to offer rigorous training in environmental science, emphasizing the application of scientific principles, modeling, and analytical techniques to real-world environmental problems. We currently offer postgraduate (M.Sc. in Environmental Science and M.Tech. in Environmental Health Risk & Safety Management) and doctoral (Ph.D.) programs that foster interdisciplinary learning across domains such as environmental health, air and water quality management, environmental biotechnology, environmental chemistry, environmental microbiology, climate science and sustainability systems.

The department's research portfolio encompasses high-impact areas including Cell biology, environmental toxicology, Environmental microbiology and Biotechnology, ambient and indoor air pollution, wastewater treatment technologies, solid and hazardous waste management, geospatial analysis, and ecosystem restoration. Faculty members are actively engaged in externally funded research projects supported by national and international agencies such as Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC), and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), among others. Our laboratories are equipped with advanced instrumentation for real-time monitoring, molecular biology, Cell culture facility and geochemical analyses etc.

We place a strong emphasis on translational research and stakeholder engagement, and our collaborations span academic institutions, industries, regulatory bodies, and civil society organizations. The department also contributes to policy dialogues and capacity-building initiatives in the areas of environmental governance and risk assessment.
