Shovan Kumar Saha followed up his B. Arch. (1970) with a Diploma in Town and Country Planning (1976) from SPA, New Delhi and joined the SPA, New Delhi as a faculty member in 1980. During 1970 to 1974 and 1976 to 1980, he worked for various reputed Architects/ firms such as Shivnath Prasad (Architect and author of first Master Plan of Delhi 1961-81), JK Chowdhury, Bijit Ghosh.

While serving at SPA, New Delhi (1980-2009), he obtained his Dr. Engg. from Kyoto University (1992) on Conservation Based Development Shahjahanabad: the Historic Capital City of India. This study was supported by the UN Center for Regional Development (UNCRD), Nagoya and carried out during his tenure at UNCRD as a Researcher and Faculty on Conservation of Precincts of Historic Cities of Asia (Delhi, Lahore, Colombo, Beijing and Penang), Improvement of Metropolitan Living Environments (Housing) in Asia (Delhi, Karachi, Dhaka, Colombo, Beijing, Bangkok, Manila, Kuala Lumpur and Seoul) and other research projects. He was part of the core group for organizing international workshops, conferences on the project themes above.
 

As a part of academic programmes of SPA, Saha led several collaborative Projects (see below) with his Masters students of Urban Planning (1980-2001) and Environmental Planning (2001-09):

Studios & SeminarsEnvironmental Management Plan of Bengaluru with students of Master of Landscape Architecture of SPA, New Delhi; Post Tsunami Redevelopment Plan of District Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu with Masters students of Landscape Architecture, SPA, New Delhi, City Planning and Landscape Architecture, Anna University, Chennai; Redevelopment Strategy for Selected Zones of Central Kathmandu, Nepal with international students of NTNU, Trondheim, Norway and students of Institute of Engineering, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu; Seminars on city planning issues of India and Japan with students of Aichi Gakuin University, Japan;

Saha successfully supervised eleven doctoral scholars of SPA, New Delhi and Co-supervised doctoral scholars registered in other Institutes;

He was appointed Founder Director of School of Planning and Architecture, Vijayawada where he served from 2009-12. From 2012-18 Saha served as the Founder Dean of School of Architecture and Planning and School of Art, Design and Media Studies at Sharda University, Greater Noida, U. P.

The Institution of Hygiene and Environmental Sanitation (IHES), with which Saha is presently associated as Director (Planning and Research), focuses on three key issues of sustainable habitat, namely, water supply, hygienic sanitation and SWM. Advice of the key persons of IHES addressed a wide range of challenges related to the above and allied sectors in rural as well as urban areas across India at varying scales for different contexts. Some of the allied sectors such as Capacity Building, Awareness Enhancement and Information Dissemination among the beneficiaries and other interested members of the community were covered. Sulabh International, Government of India, Assam, West Bengal, WHO and ADB have been some of the organizations/ Institutions for whom key persons of IHES worked.

Saha’s present engagements include writing books/ book chapters for reputed international publishers.

Presented, published technical papers, articles and researched reports on city planning, environmental planning, urban ecosystems and other themes.
