Before joining Jamia Millia Islamia Dr Md Zakaria Siddiqui was working as an Economist at the Department of Social Services, Government of Australia. Currently he is the Vice president of Indian Health Economics and Policy Association (IHEPA). Dr Siddiqui is well known for professional training sessions/workshops on Nationally representative datasets. He also maintains a popular blog for helping NSS data users.  

Dr Siddiqui served as faculty at Gulati Institute of Finance and Taxation, Kerala and other prominent institutes such as BITS Hyderabad, Institute of Economics and Peace, Sydney, University of South Australia, Adelaide and Institute of Development Studies Kolkata.

He conducts data driven research in Applied Economics and Public Policy research with themes such as Inclusive Growth, Public Health and Nutrition; Informal labour, Women and Work; Political Economy of Energy Sector Policies; Energy Poverty; Skilled Migration and Development; Positive Peace as a predictor of political/social instability; and Development and Democracy.

Dr Zakaria Has contributed significantly 1) to  "Calorie Puzzle" Debate in India, 2) in unravelling complex role of socio-economic status in determining nutritional outcomes for different age groups 3) in understanding the role of scientific diasporas in the development process 3) on gender related issues in labour market and social policy 4)  in understanding the regulatory issues in power sector of India and 5) on Energy Poverty in India.
