Prof. Mainuddin received Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Jamia Millia Islamia in 1994 with a CPI of 96.49 (First position with Honors.). He received M.E. degree from the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Delhi College of Engineering in 2003, securing First position with Honors (86.16 %). He completed his Ph.D. in 2008 from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi.
He joined the prestigious Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in 1996 where he worked as a Senior Research Scientist for more than 16 years. He served with distinction at Laser Science and Technology Centre, DRDO, New Delhi contributing immensely towards research in cutting edge area of high power lasers and applications. During his tenure at DRDO he was awarded the DRDO Laboratory Scientist of the Year Award in 2002, DRDO Technology Group Award in 2001 and 2006, DRDO commendation certificate in 2007 and 2010.
In order to fulfill his penchant for teaching and molding the future generation of Electronics Engineers in the country he joined as Professor with the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi in 2013.
He served with excellence as Head of the Department from Nov’2014- Oct’2017. During the tenure, he made notable contributions for technological upgrade of the department. He was instrumental in starting a new MTech  program in Electronics and Communication Engineering along with establishing a state of the art ‘Optoelectronics and Optical Communication laboratory’ capable of conducting contemporary research in the field. He along with his team implemented Outcome Based Education (OBE) and necessary documentation for NAAC and NBA accreditation.
His research interests include Optoelectronics, Optical Diagnostics, Sensors & Instrumentation, Antenna Design, Data Mining and High Power Lasers.
He has published 54 research papers in archival journals with high impact factor like IEEE Transactions, Optical Research, Optics & Laser Technology, Quantum Electronics, Sensors and Actuators: B, Infrared Physics & Technology and Measurement Science & Technology etc. He has authored a book on “Sensors and Measurement Techniques for Chemical Gas Lasers” by International Frequency Sensor Association (IFSA) Publishing, Barcelona, Spain and contributed eight book chapters published by Springer, Cambridge University Press and Nova Publishers. In addition he has presented 33 papers in International refereed conferences and 37 national conferences/ symposiums. He serves as reviewer (on invitation from Editor) for IEEE Transaction on Instrumentation and Measurement, Instrumentation Science and Technology and Optics and Laser Technology.
He has given numerous invited and plenary talks. He has delivered invited lectures in various continuous education programs pertaining to the field of Electronics and Communication Engineering.
He is a life member of Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) and Indian Laser Association (ILA). He has served as a convener for International Abilympics-2003.
