Dr. Rafiullah Azmiis currently a Research Associate in Assistant Professor grade at the Center for West Asian Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), New Delhi. Before joining JMI, he worked at the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA), Delhi, a premier think-tank concerned with strategic and defence matters.
He specializes on the US involvement in the West Asian region, Security of the Gulf region, Evolution of the History of both sides of the Gulf, and India’s relation with the Gulf in the contemporary era. His other major themes of interests are: the issue of the Gulf security, geo-politics of energy security and the Gulf, India’s energy security, the role of Islamists in politics and the question of democratisation in the region.
Dr. Azmi is teaching two courses: Modern History of the West Asia, and the US Policy towards the Gulf to the M. Phil students of the Centre. He has also taught courses to post-graduate students at the Department of Islamic Studies, JMI.
He has published a book and also contributed chapters in edited books. He has also published several articles in research journals.
He has traveled to the UK, UAE, Sultanate of Oman, Iran and Turkey for participation in the conferences and research field trip.
Dr. Azmi was born and brought up in Azamgarh, U.P. After schooling, he moved to Aligarh Muslim University Aligarh for higher education and obtained M.A. degree in History. Subsequently, he joined Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, for his research pursuit and earned M. Phil. & Ph.D. degrees from the School of International Studies of the same university.
