Introduction

Prof. Mohammad Zahid Ashraf
Director (Academics), Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi

Prof. Mohammad Zahid Ashraf is presently a Professor, Department of Biotechnology and Director (Academics) at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. A PhD in Biosciences from the Department of Physiology, Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute, University of Delhi, Delhi & Department of Biosciences, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. He received his postdoctoral training from Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, USA.  Prof. Ashraf is a biotechnologist known for his studies on thrombosis experienced at high altitudes. His area of research includes High Altitude Biology, Translational Biology, Thrombosis, Cardiovascular Biology and Genomics.

He is fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad and Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to biosciences, in 2017–18. He received Indian Council of Medical Research’s prestigious Basanti Devi Amirchand Award for year 2018. He is a member of panel of Oils and Fats, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. 

He is also an invited member of the Pulmonary Vascular Research Institute and a recipient of Innovations Award (2008) of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, P.A. Kurup Oration Award (2014) of the Indian Society for Atherosclerosis Research and Rear Admiral M. S. Malhotra Award (2014) of DRDO.

Prior to joining Jamia Millia Islamia, Prof. Ashraf served as Head, Genomics Division at Defence Institute of Physiology & Allied Sciences (DIPAS) of Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) for nine years.
