Sustainable Procurement

Jamia Millia Islamia is committed to promoting environmental sustainability through its procurement practices. Sustainable procurement is the cornerstone of our responsibility towards minimizing the environmental impact and promoting positive social outcomes. This policy outlines our dedication to sourcing products and services that prioritize sustainability, eco-friendliness, and ethical considerations.

(A) Minimize Consumption
All user departments are required to review their consumption patterns of existing products and equipment to minimize unnecessary purchases. Utilize processes, technologies, products, or services that reduce consumption of natural resources or chemicals.

(B) Specifications for Sustainability
The following guidelines shall be adopted by all departments/centres/offices of Jamia Millia Islamia while formulating specifications that prioritize environmental responsibility, social impact, and sustainable practices in the procurement of goods, equipment, machinery, and services. The Purchase and Stores Office shall ensure that the tenders are also reviewed by the Central Purchase Committee vis-a-vis the guidelines for sustainability.

Resource Efficiency
  1. Specify products that are designed for minimum 3-Star energy efficiency, reducing resource consumption during operations.
  2. Encourage the use of materials that are easily recyclable or biodegradable to promote a circular economy.
  3. Encourage use of water saving fixtures/faucets, bio-based plastics, or recycled materials.
Transportation Impact
Wherever possible, specify products that are locally sourced or manufactured to minimize transportation emissions.

(C) Horticultural Maintenance
(i) The Horticulture Department shall be entrusted with the regular upkeep and maintenance of the green spaces across the campus.
(ii) Pruning, watering, fertilization, and pest control measures shall be carried out regularly to ensure the health and vitality of flora in the campus.

(D) Greenhouse Initiatives
(i) To promote sustainability and self-reliance, JMI shall establish greenhouses for cultivating organic vegetables and herbs.
(ii) These green spaces shall serve as educational tools, showcasing sustainable agriculture practices to students and campus residents.

(E) Herbal Gardens and Nurseries
(i) Herbal gardens shall be established within the university premises, showcasing a diverse range of medicinal plants and herbs.
(ii) These gardens will not only promote traditional herbal knowledge but also facilitate research and education in herbal medicine.

(F) Research and Development Labs
(i) State-of-the-art laboratories shall be set up to further research and development in biodiversity conservation.
(ii) Collaborative efforts with research institutions and government agencies shall be encouraged to drive innovation in environmental sustainability.
