Dr. Zahid Husain Khan (Retd.)

Dr. Zahid Husain Khan has been a Full Professor of Physics in Jamia Millia Islamia (a Central University), New Delhi, India from November 1994 to January 2015, where he joined as a Lecturer in Physics in January 1976 and retired as Professor in June 2013, following which he was re-employed by the University and he served till January 2015. He obtained Ph.D. (1975), M.Phil. (1971), M.Sc. (1969) and B.Sc. (1967) degrees from Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, India. His research interests are primarily in molecular and laser spectroscopy. He has published more than 60 research papers in peer-reviewed international and national journals and guided 15 research scholars leading to their Ph.D. degrees. He served as the Head, Department of Physics, Jamia, Jamia Millia Islamia from April 1995 to February 1998.

Dr. Khan has been a DAAD Fellow at the Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich, Germany (1980-1981) and Free University Berlin (1981-1982). Also, he was a Visiting Scientist in the Department of Physics, Kaiserslautern University, Germany during October - December 1997. Recognizing his outstanding commitment and leadership in promoting Indo-German Relations in the field of education, Dr. Khan was awarded the title of ‘Honorary DAAD Advisor’ (2006-2009) by the President of DAAD, Bonn.

Dr. Khan has vast experience in the university administration and has served twice as the Registrar of Jamia Millia Islamia, during July 2002 – July 2005 and May 2009 – November 2009. He also served as the Dean of Students’ Welfare of the University from August 2010 to October 2011. Dr. Khan is an expert in University Laws and has served as the Chairman of the Standing Committee for Act, Statutes and Ordinances of the University from 2007 to 2014. He also served simultaneously as the Director of FTK-Centre for Technology of the University from 1998 to 2014, and subsequently as its Honorary Advisor up to November 2014. Under his guidance a state-of-the-art ICT infrastructure was created in the University, together with implementation of ERP system and e-governance. Recognizing his rich experience in education and ICT, the Ministry of Education, Government of India co-opted him in 2009 as a member of the Standing Committee for the National Mission of Education Through ICT (NMEICT), where he was involved till 2014.

Following declaration of the year 2015 by the United Nations as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015), the UNESCO nominated Prof. Khan as a National Contact for India for IYL 2015. With the great success of IYL 2015, the UNESCO declared the May 16 th as the International Day of Light (IDL), which was launched in its headquarters in Paris on May 16, 2018. For IDL 2018, Dr. Khan was again nominated by UNESCO as the National Node for India, which continued in the subsequent years as well. During IYL 2015, he was co-opted as a member of the Steering Committee of the International Working Group on Ibn Al-Haytham, based in Paris (France). Subsequently, Ibn al Haytham LHiSA International Society was formed, which was registered in Paris in January 2016, in which Dr. Khan was elected as a Vice-President of the society.

Dr. Khan has travelled extensively in Europe and some countries in North America, Middle East and Asia Pacific to deliver invited talks and participate in various thought leadership forums. He has been the member of committees in various Indian universities and has been providing them advisory services on diverse issues ranging from academic excellence to effective governance models.

Currently, Dr. Khan is associated with Zaheer Science Foundation, New Delhi as a Member of its Governing Board.
