Awards Received

  • Winner of the 1st Prize for the Inter Collegiate Elocution Competition during the Graduation Course for all the three years, 1970 - 73.
  • Winner of the 1st Prize for Moral Science for all the 3 years of Graduation.
  • Winner of the Special Prize for Selfless Service to the Institution, during the B.A. Course in 1973. (St. Teresa’s College, Kerala University)

Highlights of Important Contributions

I. Work Experience

(A) 34 years in the Legal Profession, (Enrolled as an Advocate in the High Court of Kerala in 1976).

  • Practised in the High Court of Kerala from 1976 - 1983,
  • Lecturer in Law, Andhra Christian College of Law, Guntur, Nagarjuna University, July 1, 1985 - October 30, 1988.
  • Member of the Faculty, National Law School of India University, Bangalore, from November 1, 1988 till September, 1992.
  • Associate Professor, Faculty of Law, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, from January 20, 1994
  • Professor of Law, Faculty of Law, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, from February 2008.

(B) Deputy Director (Legal) (Honorary), Independent Bureau for Humanitarian Issues, Geneva, from October 1992 to January 1993 undertaking Legal research on humanitarian issues.

(C) Engaged in Research and promotional activities on Humanitarian Issues in the capacity of Founder Secretary-General Honorary), Indian Centre for Humanitarian Laws and Research (Since 1993).

(D) Consultant (Legal), National Commission for Women from October, 1993 to April 9, 1995.

II. Participation in the Academic Staff Training Programme /Refresher Course

  • Attended two Academic Staff Training Programmes sponsored by the U.G.C., and organized by the National Law School of India University, Bangalore.
  • Co-ordinated the first U G C sponsored Refresher Course in Law, organized by the Academic Staff College, JMI, in February 2009.

III. Research Activities

  • Assisted Prof. Gene Kassebaum, Professor of Sociology, University of Hawaii, in a research project on the Working of Lok Adalats in Karnataka, in India, under the auspices of the American Institute of Indian Studies, in 1989 - 90.
  • Completed a Project under the Scheme of Prevention of Atrocities on Women, sponsored by the Department of Women and Child Welfare, Government of India, in 1992.
  • Completed M. Phil. In Law from the National Law School of India University, Bangalore, 1993.
  • Completed Ph. D. in Law from the University of Delhi, 2008.

IV. Other innovative activities

  • Staff advisor of the Student Bar Association, National Law School 1991 – 92.
  • Subject Advisor of the Jamia Law Students Association,
  • 1996 - 97, 1997 - 98 & 2005 - 06.
  • Accompanied students for a Legal Literacy/Awareness Programme for the visually handicapped at New Delhi on March 1, 1997.
  • Participated and won prizes in Moot Court, Literary, Dramatics and Cultural Activities, and also organized and coordinated such activities.
  • Prepared the Curriculum Design and the Course Outline and edited cases in Criminal Law and Tort Law and assisted in the preparation of reading material for Law and Urban Development for the Students of the B.A., LL.B (Hons.) Course, while teaching the above Courses at the National Law School of India University, Bangalore.
