UGC workshop on Capacity Building of Women Managers in Higher Education (Publish Date: 01/11/2006)

09th November 2006
The Department of Electrical Engineering, Jamia Millia Islamia, is organizing a UGC workshop on Capacity Building of Women Managers in Higher Education on Nov 13-18, 2006. The UGC has launched a major programme for women in higher education in the academic and administrative streams.  Planning for the programme began with the germination of the idea in 1997 and preparation of training manuals in 1998.  Since 2003, fourteen regional workshops have been held.  The reason for establishing this activity is the low percentage of women at decision-making levels in India universities and colleges.  The UGC has been keen to weave in gender justice and equality in higher education policies and curricula.  To achieve this objective, one area of concern is the need to raise the number of women in decision-making positions in higher education.  The above-mentioned scheme invites universities to nominate women in the middle level and higher level positions to undergo the programme, which extends from five to six days.  In due course, it identifies some of them as trainers and provides a special skills training workshop to take on the role of coordinators and resource persons, so that they can undertake the responsibility for organizing these workshops.  It has created, so far, a pool of about 100 trainers.
JMI had deputed participants for both the workshops and we are happy to announce that we have been selected to conduct one sensitization workshop.  We are responsible to conduct the programme for higher education institutions in our geographical area.  This is aimed at women academicians or administrators who are in middle or higher level positions in universities including principals and department staff in colleges, not necessarily only from women's colleges. The participants for this workshop are from Delhi University , GGS Indraprastha University , IGNOU, and Jamia MIllia Islamia. The resource persons include Dr. Armaity Desai, former UGC Chairperson, Dr. Jaya Indiresan, Dr. Pam Rajput, Dr. Karuna Chanana, Dr. Rewa Nayyar and other eminent academic leaders from across North India .
The workshop will be inaugurated by Dr. Syeda Hameed, Member, Planning Commission and the session will be presided over by Dr. Mushirul Hasan Vice-Chancellor, Jamia. For details contact, the coordinator of the Workshop at JMI, Dr Mini Thomas, cell no. 9810424609.
