Infectious diseases are the second most important killer in the world and number three in developed nations. The discovery of antibiotics have revolutionized modern medicine and saved millions of lives. However, the future of antibiotic therapy is in jeopardy due development of drug resistance among pathogens. Drug resistant tuberculosis alone kills 2,50,000 people every year. WHO (2018) have recognized, antibiotic resistance as one of the biggest threats to the global human health. Anthropogenic activities have accelerated development of multidrug resistance in both clinical settings and natural environment.

Our studies involve understanding the mechanism of antibiotic and heavy metal resistance: emergence, maintenance and spread among bacteria from natural environment as well clinical settings. Special interests include blaTEM, blaSHV, blaCTX-M, blaCMY and mcr, pmr, pho, mgr genes conferring resistance to Extended spectrum β lactam and polymyxin antibiotics respectively. We are also working on Co-resistance of antibiotics and heavy metals (mercury, silver and arsenic etc) among bacteria. Our collaborative work includes biosynthesis /chemical synthesis of antimicrobial agents/ coating materials and evaluation of their activity against sensitive as well as drug resistant microbes.
