Press Release: Workshop on ‘Writing Conflict’ by Writer Githa Hariharan at Jamia

The Outreach Programme of Jamia Millia Islamia is going to organize a One-Day Workshop on ‘Writing Conflict’ by Githa Hariharan on February 15, 2012 at Nehru Guest House, Jamia Millia Islamia.

25 students will participate in the workshop from various departments of the University. The workshop will consider some major challenges of writing about conflict – be it the more obvious examples of war or riots, or the more convert day-to-day experience of prejudice and discrimination.

It will explore questions such as -- What are some of the research and narrative strategies involved in writing about fear and grief, hatred and despair? To explore possible answers to this question, the workshop will use a combination of conversation, writing exercises, and discussion of texts from different parts of the world, both prose extracts and poetry.

Githa Hariharan is a renowned Writer & Novelist and Scholar in Residence at Jamia Millia Islamia. Hariharan’s published works include novels, short stories, essays, newspaper articles and columns. Her first novel, The Thousand Faces of Night (1992), won the Commonwealth Writers prize for the best first novel. Her novels have also been translated into a number of European and South Asian languages and both The Thousand Faces of Night and In Times of Siege were also published in England and the United States of America.
