Welcome message of Officiating VC

Prof. S. M. Sajid

Jamia Millia Islamia derives its name from Urdu language in which Jamia means University and Millia means National. This University, born off the Indian National Movement and patriotic fervour, was founded in response to a call by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920 to boycott the Government-supported institutions.

Today it has 9 faculties, 39 departments and 33 research centres with nearly 18000 students on rolls. The University has a distinction of offering education from nursery school to doctoral level.

The story of Jamia is that of commitment and sacrifices by its founders. This continued to inspire commitment and sincerity of the teachers associated with this institution right from its inception to the present day.

The University is inching closer to the significant milestone of completing 100 years in 2020. In the last 93 years, the University, with its unique nationalistic and progressive ethos, has selflessly served the country by bringing into the ambit of formal education thousands of youth from the deprived sections of the society. Boys and girls who are first generation learners are seeking to change their destiny and thereby the destiny of their families and the society by enrolling at the University in large numbers. Jamia Millia Islamia has not failed these first-generation learners. Our teachers realize the additional responsibility to educate and make them into fine, confident citizens of this country.

The education in the 21st century requires the University to keep pace with global changes. A large number of foreign Universities have shown keen interest to collaborate with Jamia Millia Islamia for research, student and faculty exchange, conferences and seminars. Jamia Millia Islamia continues to celebrate the diversity among its teachers, students and staff members. We need to think innovatively and reiterate our commitment to strive for excellence in our research and academic progress.

I extend all those who have been connected with Jamia in the past and those presently associated, my best wishes.
