The Department of Mathematics at Jamia Millia Islamia was established in the year 1971 with the introduction of B.Sc. (Hon.) course in Mathematics. Currently the Department offers
- B. Sc./ B.A. (Hons.)
- B.A./B. Sc. (General)
- M. Sc. Mathematics with Computer Science
- M. A./ M. Sc. (Evening) Mathematics
- M. Sc. Tech. Industrial Mathematics with Computer Applications and a regular
- Ph. D. Program
besides teaching the core Mathematics courses to those B. A. and B.Sc. students who offer Mathematics as a subsidiary subject.
Post Graduate Programs
The 2-year M. Sc. Program in Mathematics with Computer Science was started in 1984 and our Department was among the first few Departments in the country to have introduced Computer Science at Post Graduate level. Our M. Sc. program is designed to equip the students with advanced level of training in Mathematics as well as to provide a rigorous exposure to Computer Science so that they can take up jobs in the software industry or can pursue their career in research and teaching in Mathematics or in Computer Science. Also, the students on successful completion of this program should be able to handle responsible position in many public and private sector organizations where they require thorough knowledge and expertise in computer programming and in the use of computer packages.
The Department has recently introduced a Three-year M. Sc. Tech. Program in Industrial Mathematics with Computer Applications. This Program comprises courses in different areas of Mathematics as well as in Computer Science and Operations Research. The rigorous exposure to Mathematics, Operations Research and Computer Applications are aimed at equipping the students of this program with theories and analytical techniques as well as thorough knowledge and expertise in the use of latest Computer packages so that they can work competently in diverse areas. Subsequently, the students on successful completion of this course should be able to work in the field of Actuarial Science, Banking, Information Technology, Financial and Market Research Analysis, other public and private sector organizations and in Industrial Research and Development. The main aim of this program is to prepare the students to work competently as a Mathematician in industry.
Admissions
The admission to all the programmes in the Department is through a written test followed by an interview as per the following distribution of marks.
Written: 85 Marks Interview: 15 Marks
Faculty
At present, the faculty of the Department consists of 6 Professors, 4 Readers and 3 Lecturers who, apart from teaching, are actively engaged in research in the field of Complex Analysis, Differential Geometry, Functional Analysis, Algebra, Fluid Dynamic, Approximation Theory, Fracture Mechanics, Computer Applications, Fuzzy Mathematics, Coding Theory and Data Mining. The Department offers exciting research opportunities for bright and motivated students to work in the field of Mathematics, Computer Science and interdisciplinary areas.
The members of the department have published more than 260 research papers in national and international Journals of repute and have guided more than 50 research students for Doctorate degree.
There is a lot of interaction of the faculty with other research workers both within and outside the country. Most of the senior faculty has a wide experience of teaching and training abroad. The Department has its own Computer Laboratory wherein the students are given intensive practical training. The Department houses a Library funded by the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM). There are more than twelve hundred books on higher mathematics, mostly of postgraduate and research level.
The Department is teaching Mathematics & Computer Science to about 450 Undergraduate and 200 Postgraduate students. Moreover, there are more than 25 research scholars enrolled in Ph.D. program.
In 1999 our Department was ranked among the Top 20 Departments of Mathematics of the country as per the ranking of National Institute of Science Technology and Development Studies, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), New Delhi, India.
