Department of Biotechnology, Jamia Millia Islamia was established in the year 2008 under the Faculty of Natural Sciences. The Department offers graduate and master courses on semester system pattern and Ph.D. program in biotechnology as per recent UGC norms. Initially, from the year 2001-2007, courses at the level of Graduate (B.Sc. Biotechnology) and Masters (M.Sc. Biotechnology) were running in the Department of Bioscience in self finance mode. Department of Biotechnology is equipped with fully air-conditioned offices, classrooms and labs. At present, its student intake capacity is 30 students each for B.Sc. and M.Sc. courses. So far more than nine batches of M.Sc. and B.Sc. have obtained their degrees. Undergraduate from this department have competed to get entry into the prestigious institutions such as IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, MAMC (University of Delhi), AIIMS and JNU etc for their study at Masters’ level and further. Many of our postgraduate students qualify in various national fellowship programs such as UGC-CSIR NET, ICMR, DBT and GATE.
M.Sc. Biotechnology program is among top 10 Biotech Programs (among Public funded Institutions) in an All India Survey and sustained it for three consecutive years.
Presently, the Department is headed under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Mohammad Husain who acquired long academic experience at well reputed Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York. Irfan Qureshi (PDF from Italy), Dr. Kapil Dev, Dr. Meetu Gupta, Dr. Sadaf Fatima and Dr. Abdur Rub (PDF from USA) are engaged in research programs in their respective research area such as proteomics & bioinformatics, medical molecular biology, Environmental Biotechnology and Plant Ecotoxicology & Ecophysiology, protein chemistry and molecular biology of host-parasite interaction. The faculty members have published more than 100 research articles/chapters in journals/books of national and international repute. All faculty members are active in doing advance research funded by various Govt. of India agencies such as UGC, CSIR, DBT, ICMR, DST, etc. with around 25 Ph.D. students/Project fellows working on several important research topics.
